Fishing is arguably the fastest and easiest way to make money early on in Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch, but you’ll find that the fishing rod available to you will break pretty quickly.
If only there was a way to make infinite fishing rods fast and free. Oh, wait! There is a way, and I’m going to show you how.
You will need a ton of tree branches, time, and a little bit of patience to make infinite fishing rods in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Tree branches can be found around town and in abundance, allowing you to create infinite fishing rods and more.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch has 80 different fish for players to catch. In this guide, we’ll show you how, when, and where to catch them all. To become a fishing master, you’ll. You do typically have to have finished working for him though. Also it seems when you have a high HRA rating, by having complete furniture sets you have more good luck, which includes the 4 tools being in the lost and found. ►Why fishing rods?
Like I mentioned, fishing is one of the best ways to make money during the early game.
Fish can be found at all times of the day
- in the ocean along the beach
- in the ponds throughout town,
- and in the rivers and streams that divide your land.
Additionally, fishies are never-ending with many providing a substantial return on investment when sold to Resident Services or Nook’s store.
That is why I will be focusing on crafting infinite fishing rods. Catching and selling fish is the best “bang for your Bell”.
Although, the material required to make these rods can also be used to make infinite flimsy nets and anything else that requires this unnamed resource.
What is this unnamed resource, you ask? Tree branches (as you may have already guessed).
►Tree branches?
Yup. Tree branches.
Those unassuming twigs that you will most likely find every day, lying around a handful of trees across your island.
I spent too much time during the first week of my play sessions, running around collecting tree branches to craft flimsy fishing rods. What a chore!
That was before I discovered a way to obtain as many tree branches as I wanted. I used to think the only amount of branches I would obtain were the ones that had fallen off my trees during the night.
But, I was wrong. I found out a relatively quick way to obtain infinite tree branches.
How do I get infinite tree branches?
Obtaining an endless supply of tree branches is one of the easiest things you can do in New Horizons. It really is.
How To Obtain Infinite Tree Branches (Animal Crossing: New Horizons Step-By-Step)
- Find any tree in your town. Make sure the tree is not too close to any other object such as another tree or a rock (you can still perform this trick but you may obtain less tree branches at a time).
- It doesn’t matter if it is a fruit tree or not. You will still get tree branches.
- Shake the tree (if it has fruit, Bells, or any other item visible in its leaves).
- Make sure you pick up any item surrounding the tree. That includes items that dropped from the tree or any other items you may have placed next to it.
- Dig up any cracks close to the tree.
- Get into position. Once you have done all of the above, stand on either the right or left side of the tree.
- Repeatedly shake the tree until tree branches fall from it. Continue shaking the tree until 8 branches fall to the ground.
- Now, move to the other side of the tree (go to the left side of the tree if you were initially standing on the right and vice versa).
- Repeat. Repeat the process of shaking the tree until an additional 6 branches fall from the tree.
- Pick up the branches.
- Repeat until your inventory is full of tree branches.
So getting infinite tree branches is that easy?!?!
Yup. It sure is that easy. There are, however, a few things you should consider.
- Shake a tree, pick up the branches, and repeat. That is the underlining method to this trick.
- Up to 14 tree branches can be shaken from a tree and fall to the ground at one time. No matter how many times you shake the tree after that, you will not receive any more tree branches until you have picked up the ones that have fallen.
- Why do I say “up to 14 tree branches”? The number of branches you can shake from a tree before needing to pick them up all depends on how close a tree is to a body of water. You may receive less if it is too close to say pond or river.
- You may also receive less tree branches if there are objects around the tree, preventing tree branches from dropping.
Just remember that the placement of your tree affects the amount of branches you can shake out of it during one attempt.
Regardless of the tree’s positioning, however, you can always pick up any fallen tree branches and then keep shaking the same tree for more branches.
Remember the three steps: shake tree, pick up branches, repeat.
►How do I make infinite flimsy fishing rods?
Now that you have infinite tree branches, how do you turn those into infinite flimsy fishing rods? Just as easy.
And you’ll never have to purchase another flimsy fishing rod ever again.
How To Make Infinite Flimsy Fishing Rods (Animal Crossing: New Horizons Step-By-Step)
- Acquire as many tree branches as you can. For this trick, try collecting about 150 tree branches. Since 30 will fit in one inventory slot, obtain 5 inventory slots of 30 branches.
- Next, obtain access to a DIY workbench. You can find a DIY workbench in Resident Services, on an island you visited via the airport, in some villagers’ homes, and you can even make one yourself.
- Access the workbench and select the “Flimsy Fishing Rod” recipe (Reminder: you can also create fishing nets or anything else that solely requires tree branches for its creation).
- The Recipe requires 5 tree branches to make. Luckily, you’ll have plenty by now as long as you followed the steps in this guide.
- Craft the flimsy fishing rod.
- Repeat until you have infinite fishing rods. Or, until your inventory is full.
Cool! You now have access to endless flimsy fishing rods.
Use these rods to fish to your heart’s content and then sell those fish for massive profits. Or, upgrade your flimsy fishing rod to a better version that’ll last longer and keep you fishing til the sun sets.
►Final question: Can I sell the flimsy fishing rods or the tree branches for profit?
You can sell them, but you will not make much profit.
Tree branches and flimsy fishing rods sell for very little. It would be a waste of time doing so.
Fishing (and even catching and selling bugs) will make you more money than selling your hard earned flimsy rods or branches.

If you’re like me, the first thing you want to do in any Animal Crossing game is to start fishing. Sure, talking to other islanders, organizing your house, and all that other stuff is fun, but reeling in a huge shark is even more so. And the Bells you earn make this one of the most important things you can do on the island. But while you may already know how it all works, you may not have the right tool for the job. Here’s how to get the fishing rod in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
How to Get the Fishing Rod
At the beginning of your time on Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ island you won’t have any tools. There’s quick ways to get them though, even if they aren’t the best in the game. The first version of all the items you acquire will be “flimsy”, so starting out you’ll be getting the Flimsy Fishing Rod. This will work, but be sure to upgrade or get the better version when it is available much further into the game (meaning actual days spent playing).
To get the fishing rod you have two options. The quickest and easiest is to craft it while following Tom Nook’s advice early in the game (see below). However, later on you can always pick one up at Nook’s Cranny. This shop, run by Timmy and Tommy, offers many useful items, but sometimes not everything is available. Check in as much as you can and they should have the fishing rod pretty early on. Many important items are offered in the cabinet in the top left of the store. If they don’t have it then you’ll be stuck with option 2, which is crafting.
How to Craft the Fishing Rod
We’ve told you how to craft items before, so check that out if you aren’t sure. The recipe for the Flimsy Fishing Rod requires five tree branches to create. Shake or hit trees to get these if you need them then come back to create your new fishing rod. Alternatively there are some events that will reward a fishing rod, but by then you will have missed out on a lot of good fishing.
